We would like to thank the dedicated volunteers who attended and helped collect over 50 bags of dumped rubbish/litter + old TV, hoover, carpet etc collected from the canal bank and tow path stretch between Mexborough and Swinton.
This clean-up event was organised by Mexborough First in partnership with the Canal & River Trust, British Legion and the Swinton Lock Activity Centre.
We couldn’t have done it without the support of Tom Attree and the volunteer crew of the Swinton Lock boat which enabled volunteers to access litter hot-spot areas, collect bags of rubbish and offer much-needed refreshments for the volunteers to keep strength up and spirits high.
Two local girls, Rebecca (17) and Kennedy (16), are youth members of the British legion and joined us as part of their community citizenship studies (pictured attached).
Sean Gibbons of Mexborough First said ‘This was the second clean-up event of Mexborough Canal area and we are planning on holding similar events every quarter. It is fantastic to see so many volunteers come together across partner organisation and local residents with a common aim – to clean-up our town and make it a more enjoyable place to live, work and visit. Huge thanks to Lucy Dockray of the Canal & River Trust for her support’.
Work is now underway to identify exactly which aspects of land are either DMBC, Canal & River Trust or Network Rail responsibility so we can arrange appropriate groundwork and cutting back of over-growth by contractors in readiness for the next clean-up in May 2015.
