Mexborough First Councillor Andy Pickering has welcomed the recent work being undertaken to tarmac the surface of the Sarah Street car park in Mexborough. Councillor Pickering comments, “It’s pleasing to see in the past the site being well utilised giving an indication people are being attracted into the town centre. The car park has been a safety hazard for many years and the tarmac surfacing is a necessary and welcome improvement. However, even to think about starting to charge a fee for its use would be a backward and counter-productive step. If Doncaster Council is contemplating car parking charges then I will be strongly objecting to such a move.”

At a recent Mexborough First meeting members adopted the policy that there should be no car parking fees for the Sarah Street or the multi-story car park attached to the present Tesco. Mexborough First believes that charging fees would be incompatible with the objective of the regeneration of Mexborough. Councillor Pickering further commented, “I am pleased that Mexborough First supporters have endorsed my position on resisting car parking changes. To start charging now would not make economic sense, particularly when we are looking to attract new businesses to fill the vacant premise that will be left by the departure of Tesco.”
