Thankfully the rain stopped for the switch-on at 5pm!
Highlights of the event –
- circa 1,500 people attended throughout the day (11am – 6ishpm)
- Right Up Our Street had given out free 1,000 ‘Mexborough Manifesto’ bags by around 1pm + then 1,500 MM postcards + 300 MM poster prints by 4pm
- we had a dozen festive stalls selling seasonal candles, ornaments, decorations etc i.e. a ‘Christmas Market’
- fter paying out a small donation for the brass band and DJ, we have a £50 surplus (raffle + awaiting a donation via Tuby’s) towards future ‘Mexborough Action Team’ (MAT) events + a 1 year public liability insurance policy arranged by DMBC.
- MAT will be fully constituted in the new year with bank account and insurance and consists of a growing team of like-minded community activists wanting to improve Mexborough’s offerings
- additional fund-raising was done on Sat for McMillan (£185), Mex Rangers (£200) & Little People UK (charity set-up by Warwick Davis and his wife)
- additional stalls also delivered by MexCraft, ReRead, Royal British Legion, Mex Lions
- fairground rides and entertainment co-ordinated by James & Terrence Tuby & co
- entertainment provided by – ‘Fire Eater’ Jamie, Thorpe Hesley Brass Band, Mexborough Male Voice Choir, Right Up Our Street, young singer Saskia Zurek (currently auditioning for BGT), Conisbrough Castle Cavaliers Marching Band and Emma Pilling Dance Academy (+ Frosty the Snowman!)
- the official switch-on took place at 5pm with local superstar Tyler Botwood (who had another major leg op on 23rd Nov) + Mexborough-born actress Sally Carman & Tommy Joyce MBE accompanied by the Doncaster Civic Mayor Paul Wray & Junior Civic Mayor Renee Thaxter
