221 BUS SERVICE – CHANGE OF ROUTE – AUGUST 2024

Cllr Gibbons has received a number of enquiries/complaints re the proposed change of route of the 221 bus service which is to be re-routed along Harlington Road & Plumpton Avenue joining the existing route on Coniston Road/Hirst Gate etc.
This is due to the new electric buses being longer and struggling to physically access the junction at the end of Morton Road due to parked cars on both sides of the road.
This is part of an email reply received earlier this week from the Director of Development, Collaboration and Culture, Office of Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire’s Mayor (South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) –
“I can confirm that the route change is going ahead. It is important to note that this decision was made due to the previous route experiencing excessive on-street parking and poorly parked vehicles, which were preventing safe use of the route by the bus.
Although no direct consultation was conducted by Stagecoach for service 221, they did produce their own report on the route change in Mexborough.”
The problem now around a change of route is the suitability of the junction at the bottom of Plumpton Avenue for the wider electric buses. The junction at the bottom of Plumpton Avenue is narrower with a sharp bend on a very steep hill.
An increasing number of local residents are not happy with this change of route and a petition has been started.
If anyone has concerns over this change of route for the 221 bus service, please email- sean.gibbons@doncaster.gov.uk with your name, address & specific concerns and these will be formally raised with SYMCA & Stagecoach as a priority.
The whole situation is far from ideal and is problematic whichever route the 221 bus service takes using the longer electric buses.
The question is – why can’t Stagecoach use smaller buses on the built-up housing estates or would this cause capacity issues if the buses could not carry sufficient passengers?
